Ted Kaufman - United States Senator for Delaware

Kaufman Strongly Endorses Petraeus Nomination

Senator reiterates call for conditions-based drawdown of troops in 2011

June 29, 2010

WASHINGTON, DC – Senator Ted Kaufman (D-Del.), a member of the Senate Armed Services Committee, issued the following statement today after participating in the confirmation hearing for General David Petraeus – nominated to be the new commander in Afghanistan:

“General Petraeus is the best person to lead our troops in Afghanistan, and I hope the Senate moves quickly on his confirmation. I am pleased that General Petraeus reiterated his support for the President’s policy today, including the goal of a conditions-based drawdown of troops in July 2011. As he told the Committee, July 2011 represents the beginning of a transition phase in which the Afghan government will take more responsibility for its own security, which is absolutely critical in a counterinsurgency.

“I hope the administration will offer a clear assessment of progress in Afghanistan by December of this year – closely scrutinizing the level of corruption still present in the Afghan government, the status of training the Afghan Army and Police, cooperation from Pakistan, and unity of effort between the civilians and the military.

“A lack of improvement in these areas will hamper our ability to succeed.”
