Kaufman Reiterates his Support for New START Treaty

August 4, 2010

“I strongly support Chairman Kerry’s plan to vote on ratification of New Strategic Arms Reduction Treaty (START) in September, and encourage my colleagues to join me in ensuring its passage at that time.  Further delay of this vital treaty will put U.S. interests at risk and further erode global nuclear security.  Since the first START expired 242 days ago, the U.S. has gone without on-site monitoring and verification of Russian nuclear facilities, which has reduced confidence in our current nuclear planning. Former cabinet members of Republican administrations, including Secretary of Defense James Schlesinger, Secretaries of State James Baker and Henry Kissinger, and National Security Advisors Brent Scowcroft and Stephen Hadley, among others, have all testified that ratification of New START is essential to maintaining a stable nuclear environment. Congress must act as soon as we return from recess to ratify this critical treaty, which is absolutely critical to U.S. interests and security.”
