Delaware Senators Tom Carper and Ted KAUFMAN deserve credit for their leadership in ensuring a focus on wellness and disease prevention in the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act, aka the health reform bill. Thanks to their efforts, generations of our children will benefit from healthier environments and experience better health outcomes.

Carper and KAUFMAN championed many important health promotion provisions in the bill, including those that support healthy community development, obesity prevention, and expanded health insurance coverage for children. The senators also supported a strong focus on care coordination with links to community-based services relevant to children.

This represents an investment in prevention strategies for kids that reach into their homes, schools, child care centers, physician’s offices and communities. In addition, Sen. Carper led the quest for nutrition labeling of standard menu items in chain restaurants. His skillful negotiation resulted in the first-ever federal standard for menu-labeling.

Families in Delaware and nationwide will now benefit from information that can help them make healthier choices when dining out. Nemours is grateful to our Delaware senators for seizing this once-in-a-generation opportunity to move our health system forward – from a focus on sickness to a focus on wellness.

We pledge to continue working with them to promote children’s healthy development as the legislation is implemented.
