Ted Kaufman - United States Senator for Delaware

Great Federal Employees Initiative

Honoree for Week of November 2, 2009

Stephen Anderson

Director of Strategic Climate Projects, Environmental Protection Agency

Dr. Stephen Anderson has worked at the EPA since 1986, and he has worked for over twenty years on promoting American leadership within the framework of the 1987 Montreal Protocol.  That agreement is recognized as the most successful environmental accord to date, and it set a timetable to reduce or eliminate substances that caused ozone depletion.  Stephen led the effort in 2006 to renew and expand the Montreal Protocol.  He authored a groundbreaking article on its positive effects, which spurred participating nations to take steps toward its renewal.  He also has the distinction of organizing the first-ever, peaceful joint U.S.-Soviet space effort in 1986, which mapped ozone depletion.
