Ted Kaufman - United States Senator for Delaware

Great Federal Employees Initiative

Honoree for Week of May 3, 2010

Riaz Awan

Attaché, Department of Energy

Riaz Awan served as the Energy Department’s attaché in the Ukraine, and he won the 2003 Service to America Medal for International Affairs in recognition of the several years he spent living near the site of the Chernobyl disaster and working with the local communities to mitigate its social and economic impact.  As part of his work, Riaz oversaw the construction of a new concrete shelter over the former Chernobyl reactor – one of the largest and most complex engineering projects in the world at the time.  Additionally, his work on nonproliferation in the Ukraine has helped prevent terrorists from getting their hands on nuclear materials leftover from the fall of the Soviet Union.
